Sotis Filippides is a London based Greek ceramic artist. He works with grog clay – also known as firesand and chamotte – which comes in small to medium sized particles and contains a high percentage of alumina and silica. He then applies to the raw clay a variety of oxides underneath the dry glazes to achieve unique and rather unpredictable results during firing sometimes even 3 or 4 times to reach the desired effect. Sotis often uses precious metals like 24-carat gold or platinum sourced from Italy in liquid form, which create a strong and beautiful contrast with the rough textured surfaces of the clay he uses. Sotis has a studio and showroom in London and has worked internationally with several galleries and with some of the most globally renowned interior designer firms.
