Gorgeously glazed in tones of rust, sable, ivory and chocolate, this unique lidded urn with foliated pinnacle and curving handles depicts a man with upraised arms and rearing horse on one side, and a female figure riding a horse on the other. The vase is an especially rich example of the Art Deco porcelains designed by Gunnar Nylund in what he called a “flambe” glaze: rich browns or blue-grays highlighted with gold. Nylund worked at the famed Rorstrand porcelain works in Sweden from 1931-1958; and in his later years he became known for his organic forms and mottled glazes. The vase is well marked with the artist’s name and the decorator’s name on the bottom.
