An absolutely stunning large 6-panel folding screen. One of the most beautiful we have come across. The screen is hand-painted and features a stoic, proud hawk in a blooming plum tree – clearly an homage to 17th Century Edo period Japanese artist Soga Nichokuan who was famous for his various screens depicting hawks in plum and pine trees – a favorite subject of Japanese warrior-patron class from the 15th century on. The fine detail is amazing, the reflective, subdued colors superb.
This piece would surely be the crown jewel in almost any Japanese or Asian art or screen collection and would be sure to stand out in about any setting. Truly magnificent and gorgeous.
Comes with a custom handmade protective cover.
We are listing the screen as early 20th century but believe the screen could be from the late Meiji or early Taisho/ Showa period – possibly the late Edo period but less likely.
