Enormous Doria hand blown glass sphere on chrome base lamp, Italy, circa 1970. This exceptional artefact of modern design from Italy reflects the extreme interest in modernism across Europe during this period. The sphere was purposely created to be filled with random bubbles and pockets of air within the glass that capture and refract light from the interior bulbs to demonstrate its handcrafted origin. This unique lamp not only functions as light source but also as a sculptural component.
The arrangement is reminiscent of the Atomium structure in Brussels, Belgium that made its debut in 1958 and ushered in a physical embodiment of the atomic age.
When the sphere is removed the lighting structure is revealed showing four chrome lamp holders with E27 sockets with silver colored mirror head bulbs of different heights along with an arrangements of solid chromed spheres also at various heights.
